CAREER JOURNEY

Building the Technology Foundation for Growth and Acquisition

As CIO of Franklin American Mortgage, I led the modernization of a growing mortgage lender whose technology capability needed to scale with its business ambition. The mandate was to strengthen infrastructure, cybersecurity, data, delivery, and innovation while creating a more resilient and valuable enterprise. That work helped position the organization for continued growth and its eventual acquisition by Citizens Financial Group.

CAREER OVERVIEW

Modernizing a Regional Mortgage Platform from the Ground Up

Franklin American Mortgage provided the opportunity to build enterprise technology capabilities inside a fast-moving mortgage organization. I led a team of approximately 100 through 12 direct reports, with responsibility for a technology budget of roughly $10 million and for the platforms, infrastructure, security, data, and services supporting the business.

The environment required more than a technology refresh. Infrastructure needed to become more scalable and resilient, cybersecurity needed formal executive ownership, data needed to become a business capability, and delivery needed to keep pace with changing customer and market expectations.

We created a hybrid-cloud foundation, virtualized approximately 80% of the server estate, closed three data centers, consolidated collaboration through Microsoft 365 and OneDrive, established the company’s first cybersecurity function, built an analytics team, and developed new digital and machine-learning capabilities. Together, these changes strengthened the company’s operating foundation and acquisition readiness.

CIO Leadership Scope

Led approximately 100 technology professionals through 12 direct reports, with responsibility for a technology budget of roughly $10 million and the company’s enterprise technology capabilities.

Modernization and Acquisition Value

Modernized infrastructure, security, data, collaboration, and digital capabilities while strengthening the technology foundation that supported Franklin American’s acquisition by Citizens.

TRANSFORMATION JOURNEY

Creating an Enterprise Technology Capability Built to Scale

The transformation connected infrastructure, operating discipline, cybersecurity, data, workplace technology, and innovation. Rather than treating these as independent projects, we built them as mutually reinforcing capabilities designed to improve resilience, accelerate delivery, support growth, and increase the strategic value of technology to the enterprise.

LEADERSHIP MANDATE

Building a Modern Technology Organization

Established the leadership, governance, and operating disciplines required for technology to function as an enterprise capability rather than a collection of support services. The organization was aligned more closely with business priorities, risk, customer needs, and measurable outcomes.

Leading a comparatively lean technology function required deliberate prioritization. Investment decisions had to strengthen immediate performance while also creating the foundations the company would need to grow, innovate, and withstand greater operational and regulatory complexity.

INFRASTRUCTURE MODERNIZATION

Virtualizing the Estate and Closing Data Centers

Modernized the infrastructure environment through a hybrid-cloud strategy incorporating AWS and increased virtualization across the server estate to approximately 80%. The work improved flexibility, utilization, recoverability, and the organization’s ability to provision and support technology more efficiently.

The modernization enabled the closure of three data centers, reducing physical complexity and creating a more scalable operating foundation. The objective was not simply to reduce infrastructure—it was to build an environment better suited to the company’s future.

DIGITAL WORKPLACE AND OPERATIONS

Standardizing Collaboration and Service Delivery

Consolidated collaboration and productivity capabilities through Microsoft 365 and OneDrive, reducing fragmentation and improving how employees accessed information and worked across the organization. The transition also strengthened administrative control, consistency, and supportability.

The broader operating agenda focused on disciplined service delivery, platform standardization, and clearer ownership. These changes helped the technology organization support rapid business activity without allowing operational complexity to grow at the same pace.

CYBERSECURITY AND DATA

Creating Security and Analytics Capabilities

Established Franklin American’s first formal cybersecurity function and hired the company’s first CISO, giving security dedicated leadership, governance, and accountability. Cybersecurity became an enterprise risk and business-resilience capability rather than an implicit responsibility distributed across technology teams.

Built an analytics team to improve access to trusted information and strengthen data-driven decision-making. Together, security and analytics increased institutional maturity and prepared the company for the expectations associated with greater scale and acquisition scrutiny.

INNOVATION AND ACQUISITION VALUE

Turning Technology Capability into Enterprise Value

Developed a Docker- and AWS-based machine-learning pricing capability through a joint venture, demonstrating that a regional mortgage organization could combine modern engineering with applied analytics to create differentiated business value. The work contributed to innovation recognition in 2017 and 2018.

When Citizens Financial Group acquired Franklin American, technology capability became an important part of the company’s readiness and value. I supported due diligence and helped carry the modernization agenda into the combined organization, reinforcing that technology investment can influence both operating performance and strategic outcomes.

LEADERSHIP IMPACT

Leadership Principles Built Through Enterprise Creation

Franklin American reinforced that leadership in a growing enterprise requires both urgency and foundation-building. The most valuable technology decisions solve today’s constraints while increasing the organization’s capacity, resilience, and strategic options for tomorrow.

Build Foundations Before Scale

Growth becomes fragile when infrastructure, governance, talent, and operating discipline do not mature with the business.

Security Must Be Designed In

Cybersecurity requires clear executive ownership and must develop alongside the platforms and processes it protects.

Technology Can Increase Enterprise Value

Modern technology capability improves operations while expanding strategic options, including innovation, partnership, and acquisition readiness.
